ABOUT THE PROJECT
Diametric’s most recent project saw them collaborating with the premium bike brand, EXTANS, on model branding decals and product labels for their iconic bikes.
When it comes to premium, luxury bikes, you’d be hard pressed to find a brand to top EXTANS. Since 2019, they have been crafting modern, simplistic and elegant bikes for their loyal customer base; a customer base who value the stunning craftsmanship that goes into each and every one of their bikes.
Which is why EXTANS approached Diametric – to help them enhance their (already high-end) brand reputation and perception.
Upon receipt of the tooling and prototype sampling requirements, we set to work on expediting the first-off electroform decals to support the initial trial build. However, it was during this stage minor imperfection were discovered in the finishing process when coating the decals into the bike frame. Therefore, further support was required with resolving the problem. The team analysed the issues and immediately set out to find a solution. We knew that the overall weight and unique aesthetics were critical for the bike – ultimately, these were the bikes USPs – and so we needed to guarantee that any work we did would not jeopardise these major features.
Our solution. We evaluated alternative plating thicknesses against durability and introduced an alternative bonding agent. The attention to detail was second to none, and you only need to look at the finished product to see the awe-inspiring and deluxe additions to the product.
We then move onto the second project: a product label with a limited-edition serial range. In the first instance, we considered using a roll form label on premium bright silver, self-adhesive polyester. However, after reviewing the material with EXTANS, they set us the challenge to refine and expand the appearance to the next level. Whichever form we opted for, it would not be possible to coat the part in the same way as the other decals, and it would require a reliable solution for enabling serialisation, while promising a strong bond to the mating part which would be suitable for exterior use. Not an easy task!
After presenting a variety of samples in diverse finishes, EXTANS opted for a fine, aluminium hairline brushed finish with contrasting bright silver lettering; each plate would then be individually personalised. In addition, we used an automotive grade 3M adhesive to maximise the adhesion onto the carbon fibre frame. The end result was beautiful, and of the highest quality.
Our thanks to the EXTANS team for allowing us to be a part of this exciting move for your daring brand.
