PROCESSES USED
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The developers of dual fuel technology required a bespoke premium badge to brand their range of converted hydrogen dual fuel trucks.
CMB.TECH initially approached Diametric with a design brief for their new grille badge. During the design consultation, we discussed their visual requirements, and how we could ensure their corporate brand was reflected in the overall appearance of the badge. As the placement of the badge, on the front grille of a truck, meant it would be exposed to heavy industrial use, there also needed to be a strong emphasis on durability.
After considering our range of processes and their suitability in relation to the design, we were able to share a selection of material samples to showcase what could be achieved through various finishes. CMB.TECH’s marketing team then had a clearer idea for their desired appearance of the badge and decided on a gloss black background with a raised satin silver logo. To achieve the optimum overall appearance and durability, we opted to use gloss black injection moulded ABS with satin plating for the logo.
When considering feasibility, analysis of the CAD exposed a potential issue with moulding the badge as a single piece. The large surface area and manufacturing process meant there was a risk that the overall quality could be affected. This resulted in the badge being reengineered into a two-piece component, consisting of a gloss black background section and a section for the raised silver letters, with both components assembled together using gasket-cut adhesive.
As the badge revision meant it was now constructed from multiple pieces, it was essential the gap tolerances were minimal to ensure a tight fit around each letter. Visually, the badge still needed to appear as one solid component and the risk of dirt and particles getting trapped in any voids kept to a minimum.
To withstand heavy industrial use, the best exterior automotive-grade materials were used during the injection moulding process to ensure durability. A strong foam adhesive tape was then applied onto the rear of the badge to provide a robust and permanent fixture to the truck grill. We were able to advise CMB.TECH on the most suitable premium adhesive grade, based on the surface finish and material of the grille.
Upon completion of the first off samples, we performed some initial tests in-house which the badge passed. These included high pressure jet wash to ensure good paint and chrome adhesion, and an adhesive pull-off test. We then sent parts to our customer for approval and were able to proceed to a full mass production run.
Commerical Director, Phil Parker, commented, ‘this has been an exciting project from the start. CMB.TECH are paving the way in introducing hydrogen combustion technology to the truck manufacturing industry and we have been thrilled to work with them on developing this badge to showcase their brand.’
